A variation of the classic Waldorf salad, pears add a delicate and juicy quality to this old favorite.

Ingredients

3 small ripe pears, Bartlett or Anjou
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
1/2 cup diced celery
1/2 cup seedless grapes
1/4 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

Dressing:
1/4, cup mayonnaise
1/4, cup sour cream
1 tsp. fennel seed
1/4 tsp. salt

Leaf lettuce, optional
Sprig of mint, watercress or parsley for garnish

Directions

Wash pears but do not peel them. Cut out cores and dice. Sprinkle with lemon juice.

Fold pears together with celery, grapes and walnuts. Set aside.

To prepare the dressing, blend mayonnaise, sour cream, fennel seed and salt. Mix into pear mixture.

Serve in a salad bowl ringed with red-tipped lettuce, if you wish, or mounded on a leaf of lettuce on individual salad plates. Garnish with mint, watercress or parsley. Serve immediately.
